C64 Indiana Jones Last Crusade help?

Lately I've been playing with a Commodore 64 emulator, playing
all the old games I used to be addicted to back in the 80s.
Anyway, for the last couple days I've been trying to play a
game called "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", and I've
gotten to a point where I'm stuck.

I've searched the web trying to find a manual for the game,
to no avail. Apparently there are two games with this name,
and the other one has tons of info on the web, but nothing
for the one I'm playing. The C64 version is a Mario Brothers
like game where the player controls an Indy character,
walking around various levels dodging dangers. (The version
with all the documentation available is some sort of text
adventure/puzzle game with pictures).

Here's my problem - I've figured out the first section of the
game, where you travel through caves looking for whips and
torches and eventually escape to the surface. And I've
figured out the second section where you walk across the
top of a moving train, jumping over animal heads.

The third section is where I'm getting stuck. It starts out
with horizontal hallways with some sort of fireballs or
something falling from the ceiling. When you get to the
bottom of that part, there's a section where you have to
climb up ropes and some sort of wooden lattices, which
connect small horizontal platforms. Higher up, you have
to use your whip to swing from platform to platform.

My problem is that after the third whip swing, I end up on
a platform with a vertical black bar across the middle of
it. There doesn't seem to be anywhere to go from there,
but the game obviously isn't over. What's the deal? Am
I missing something? How does one get past that black
bar, and what the heck is the objective of the third
level? Why are there so many spare whips scattered around
the level when there's very little use for the whips?
What's with the lightning that keeps flashing every few
seconds?

If anyone remembers this game and can offer some advice,
I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Your description sounds a lot like I remember the PC game (the Action
Game, there was also a separate Adventure Game I believe) - you might
try PC gaming resources to see if you can find a manual that will help.

I searched all over with google and couldn't come up with anything.

Just by sheer coincidence while messing around with the game today
I stumbled onto the answer. There's a crown in the third section
that you have to find, and once you pick it up the bar blocking the
exit disappears. The problem is, the crown isn't always where it's
supposed to be - apparently you have to do certain things to make
it appear. The only method I could figure out to ensure that it
would be there was to always enter the third level via the third
"doorway" from the left, and then go down a certain dead end hallway
inside the level, all the way to the end of it. If I did those two
things, the crown was always sitting on a platform near the end of
the level. If I didn't do one or the other, the crown was never
there. I have no idea why the position you start the level from
and walking down a dead end hallway makes a difference, but it does.

After figuring that out, the game was relatively easy to complete.

If anyone out there knows what the deal with the doorway and the
dead end hallway is, please email me.
